I am interested in collecting new watches. Please advise me of how you would go about choosing a companies watches to invest in ($2500 - $7500) range. For example would you choose to collect from one company or limited additions etc...
Please give me an idea of some companies you would consider.
Advising as to which watches to buy as an investment at any price range is a tricky thing. There are no gurantees that a watch will hold its value when it leaves the store and is no longer "new" no matter how perfect the condition. That said, if you look at certain types of Patek Philippe and Rolex, and even the relatively newcomer Panerai you can't go wrong for holding value but you have to pay big money up-front and there are a lot of buyers for relatively few watches so the buy price is very high and its hard to imagine how long they will take to appreciate beyond their strong current market value. Some of the very rare and/or exotic and expensive watches can be rolled quickly for a profit if you are lucky enough to have a deposit, wait for it to be delivered, and sell as unworn. But you are typically talking about watches in the very top end of the price range ($50,000 and up) and well in excess of the stated budget.
Like cars, most lose a substantial porrtion of their value once they leave the retailer and only a very few will even hold their value, much less appreciate over the next decade. Limited editions is so overused in today's watch market that I also suspect that unless those editions are of 100 total pieces or less, and very expensive it is by no means a guarantee of appreciation in value.
Bottom line is watches are NOT a great investment if you intend to try to make short term (3-5 year) gains unless you intend on opening your own store or business and making buying and selling watches your full-time business.
